Association between puberty and delayed phase preference
Carskadon, M. A., Vieira, C., & Acebo, C.
The question
Is teens’ later sleep timing driven by biology — or only by social life?
What they did
458 sixth-graders (183 boys, 275 girls), all in the same grade, answered questionnaires on their morning–evening preference and their stage of puberty. School environment and birth order were recorded too.
What they found
In girls, more advanced puberty went with a stronger evening preference. Boys showed a similar trend that wasn’t statistically significant. School environment and birth order showed no link.
What this does NOT mean
It doesn’t mean puberty is the only reason teens sleep late — homework, friends and screens play a part. It means biology is one of the reasons.
