Cyberostracism: Effects of being ignored over the Internet
Williams, K. D., Cheung, C. K. T., & Choi, W.
The question
Does being ignored by strangers online, in a simple game, actually hurt?
What they did
1,486 people from 62 countries played an online ball-tossing game with two computer-controlled “players”. Some got the ball often; others were left out to different degrees.
What they found
The more people were left out, the worse they felt, the less control they felt and the more their belonging dropped. In a second study, people who had been left out were more likely to go along with a group on a later task.
What this does NOT mean
It doesn’t mean you’re fragile. It means the alarm for being left out is sensitive enough to go off with strangers, online, in a cartoon game.
